Beginners Patchwork Sampler Quilt

Please note this is a supported self paced course and you will be joining the Quilting Bee sessions (Monday/Tuesday afternoons 1pm-4pm) where everyone works on their own projects

If you have always wanted to make a quilt, but didn’t know where to start this is the course for you…

Don’t be daunted – its easy… you’ll stitch it, piece by piece –  a bit like eating an elephant

The course will run over 12* sessions where you will learn basic patchwork techniques including American and English Piecing, how to sash, quilt and bind a quilt.

You will build your own library of patterns, templates and skills that will enable you to complete a small quilt.

For the first few weeks, each week, you will draft, make the templates, cut and stitch a block (one of the squares within the framework)until you have 9… Then we cut out the sashing (framework) and build those blocks into a quilt top, and the remaining weeks we layer it up, with backing fabric and wadding, quilt it (stitch through all 3 layers) and stitch a binding around the edge.  Your first quilt will be finished

You can stitch by hand or by machine – I do have machines that you can use, but do bring your own machine if you can 🙂

The finished item measures 44″ square, but can easily be extended if you wish.

* There is no real timescale/pressure – you work at your own speed, taking as long as you need.

You will need to bring:

4 x 0.5 metres of cotton fabric – Choose a patterned, non-directional fabric, then choose other colours that co-ordinate with it… try to have different tones, ie pale fabrics, dark and medium fabrics.
You will need to buy more fabric for the sashing, backing and some wadding, but these can be purchased during the course
Pencil and ruler
Sharp fabric scissors and general purpose scissors
Basic sewing kit – needles and cotton to co-ordinate with your fabric

What Students Say

I joined Rachel for her Beginner’s Patchwork Sampler Quilt course a few years ago. Rachel is a patient teacher and effective communicator, who clearly knows her subject matter inside out. I was a complete beginner with no idea about fabric piecing when I started the course, but the techniques learnt have been an invaluable foundation to the contemporary textile art I now enjoy. I would recommend this course to anybody who likes to complete a project whilst learning; the finished quilt is perfect for snuggling under whilst watching TV.”
